Back Slider

OK-I am a back slider. My new goal of not eating after 7:30 PM was broken-twice. Maybe it was the au gratin potatoes that did it (bad potato! bad potato! definitely a trigger food for this carb junkie)or the PMS that is setting up shop in my ovaries. Anyhoo... I plan to be back on the wagon tonight. Also I played in the pool for several hours yesterday with a little friend so I'm glad to have gotten some exercise at least.

As a non-banded newbie, I have a few questions for you bandits out there:

Liquid vitamins or solid?
Raw veggies? Salads? How possible is this...?
Steak? Do I just need to say my 'good-byes'...?

I appreciate the voices of experience chiming in here!

  1. I am still using the Centrum chewables I bought for post-op. They taste nasty, but are bearable. After they're gone, I am going to switch to regular adult vitamins like Women's One a Day (because I have some on hand from pre-op). I am able to swallow my other pills just fine so I hope the same goes for vitamins!

I can eat raw veggies and salads just fine. It does take me a long time to eat salads, though. Keep in mind that I am at 2.5cc's in an 11cc band, but I do have pretty good restriction (when Aunt Flo isn't in town)...

I haven't tried steak yet, but we are having some tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes!

  2. Vitamins - I started out with chewables, then moved to pills I could swallow. I tried to find ones that were smaller. Now, I don't take any vitamins. I should, I just got out of the habit.

Veggies, Salads - I have absolutely no problems eating raw veggies. Or even cooked veggies for that matter. I am really careful with asparagus and don't hesitate at all to spit out the fibrousy stuff. I love my salads. Hubby and I go at least twice a month to our local Souper Salad and eat a nice salad with lots of fresh veggies with balsamic vinegar and olive oil dressing.

Steak - I haven't had any issues with steak, chops, hamburger, chicken, etc. I make sure I chew it very well after taking smallish bites. I also don't hesitate to spit out a grissly piece or even fatty piece.

On the whole, I have been very fortunate that I haven't PB'd or slimed after eating anything. But, the key is to try everything out, go slow, and listen to your body.

  3. Love your blog.
I use a vitamin that comes in a capsule. I don't have any problems with them.
As for salad, I also don't have a problem with them. I just take it slowly and make sure I chew well. Same thing with most meat. I have yet to try steak, but have had no problem with chops, sausages, mince or roasts.

I think the main thing is that you can't push the band. You need to work with it. I am not so restricted that I have trouble with anything at this stage, but when I do get another fill, I am careful when I try things that may cause problems.

Good luck, you sound like you are well on your way to becoming a happy and successful bandit.

I look forward to following your journey.

  4. vitamins: i use flintstones chewables, they are yummy and have a good amount of everything you need.

The raw veggies and salads will just depend you you, some people can do it some not so much. I can do a little bit, but I do eat alot less when I eat these types of foods than regular.

I am not too helpful on the steak front, I have never been a big red meat girl, so if I have steak its a bit of a friends when we get japenese food.

Don't worry too much, when it comes to the band everything will depend on you!

  5. I use the Lil Critters Gummy Vites that I buy from Costco. They taste great. I switched from pill to liquid on my Vicodin which I take every night, other wise, I take everything else as usual.

I can eat almost whatever I want so long as I am careful, except...Pancakes!!! Instant stuck! But I can eat most meats so long as it is in small enough bites and not too dense, if I chew it very carefully. So don't worry, you won't find it too difficult to eat afterwords. :)

  6. I buy my vitamins from www.bariactriceating.com. I've found some LapBand friendly chewable vitamins (I take two a day...called "VitaBand") and I take a daily calcium citrate chew (it's like candy!). The chews come in both lemon and chocolate flavor, but I need to eat up all my lemon chews before I can buy the chocolate, which they just come out with!

Veggies - raw veggies do okay for me, and I'm not a huge fan of cooked/steamed veggies. I do notice I have issues with lettuce, so even though I LOVE salads, I don't have them often anymore.

Meat - Red meat has been tough for me as well, but if you stick to taking SMALL slivers and chewing well, it's okay. I don't like eating like a bird, though, so I stick to the white meats most often.

    Good luck!
